In 2024, Louisiana redefined its school accountability system. Learn how these changes impact your performance score, why K–2 now counts, and how to use real-time data to drive success.

In 2024, Louisiana saw the biggest change yet to its school performance score calculations. Louisiana’s new system, Grow. Achieve. Thrive, realigns school performance calculations with the state’s evolving education priorities. The biggest change without a doubt is the inclusion of early grades accountability (K-2) into school performance scores. But that’s not to say the other changes, focused on increasing student achievement and diploma strength, aren’t going to have large ripples.

What the New 100-Point Scale Means for Schools

There’s a lot to be said for the school accountability changes in Louisiana. The switch to a 100-point scale brings both clarity and complexity. On one hand, it simplifies interpretation. On the other, it compresses important nuance that broader scales previously offered. The new system organizes performance into three intuitive domains: growing (student progress in Math and English), achieving (proficiency in core subjects), and thriving (graduation rates, college readiness, and success in postsecondary pathways). While easier to explain to stakeholders, this shift can oversimplify important performance nuances for the lay-person trying to see if they’re going to a “good” school.

Real-Time Data: A Shift in Mindset

So, how should educators and school leaders interpret their new performance profiles—and more importantly, respond proactively? I’d like to challenge you here to worry less about how your profile is changing and instead focus more on the levers you can actually control. As a system, you can’t dictate what students come through your doors, but you do dictate what supports those students receive.

One thing many sites are doing is shifting from viewing the accountability system as a pass fail grade, and starting to think about these data in more real-time ways. Systems and educational organizations are looking directly at how students are performing in interim assessments, aligning instruction with key gaps, and getting laser focused on RTI. They’re using data as a guide, almost the way that a compass would help you course correct on a sea voyage. We’ve previously highlighted Jennifer Pahluak’s work on this in her excellent book ReCoding America, but another terrific resource schools and educational organizations can utilize here is the concept of a logic model!

A strong logic model shifts the focus from activities to outcomes—clarifying how programs drive meaningful, measurable change. Rather than simply documenting what is done, a well-crafted logic model illustrates what works and why, highlighting the relationships between inputs, activities, and outcomes over time. Taking the time today to look at your current SPS, identify the activities that go into it and the outcomes produced can provide much needed clarity about where to focus your efforts and streamline data collection. I’d encourage you to access LSU’s completely free resource here on logic models, including an online course or another personal favorite (that I have been using for over a decade) is the Wisconsin Extension Logic Model overview.

Using the Cohort Achievement Tracker for SPS Predictions

The Cohort Achievement Tracker helps you model predicted SPS outcomes and align instruction accordingly. The Cohort Achievement Tracker collates student demographic and achievement data to analyze impact across school years. Data can be viewed for individual students (Master Data tab) or in summary (Analysis tab) for cohorts over time. Additionally, student goals will project Achieve metrics and Grow metrics on the Analysis tab which can be analyzed for subgroup trends by grade or demographics. Take a tour of the CAT or view a sample copy of it online here.
