Super App Season Is Here: 5 Expert Tips Every School System Needs Before Hitting Submit

For many school systems, January is the final sprint for consolidated budget creation, review, and submission.

In Louisiana, the Super App and in Arkansas, the AR App, bring all school budgets together into a single aligned submission. This process can feel intense without the right preparation.

What Are the Super App and AR App?


In states like Louisiana and Arkansas, school systems submit one consolidated budget that includes all applicable funding sources. While the unified approach is more detailed than submitting independent budgets for each grant or revenue stream, it significantly reduces duplication of effort and supports better alignment with systemwide priorities.


Before you press “submit,” here are the five most important tips to survive and succeed in your Super App or AR App submission.


 Tip #1: Consult Your Strategic Blueprint First

Super App is your biggest annual opportunity to align budgeting to your core instructional priorities. Before you enter a single dollar amount, get crystal clear on the initiatives that matter most for the upcoming year:

  • Science of reading

  • Early childhood special education

  • Career and technical education

  • High-impact tutoring

  • Teacher pipeline initiatives


Your budget should reflect the initiatives that will move the needle for students, not a mix of scattered or opportunistic investments.


Tip #2: Read the Entire Application First


Both Super App and AR App contain budget requirements that build on each other. You will need to have part A (a) before being able to submit Part C, etc. Before you begin typing into the system, read the full application from start to finish.


I recommend you create your own sandbox version of the consolidated budget. This is an offline template or spreadsheet where you can draft, revise, and rearrange investments without affecting the official submission system. It should be collaborative with your budgets team. This approach allows you to build, test, and refine budgets with confidence before entering final values.


Tip #3: Read the Guidance and Attend Office Hours


Whether you identify with the “read the manual first” crowd or the “assemble now, instructions later” crowd, budget submissions require meticulous attention to official guidance.

Tip #4: Track All Required Attachments


This is a simple but often overlooked step: don’t forget the attachments. There were times when I was reviewing the application and the attachment the system submitted was a word document with the words “DON’T FORGET TO FILL THIS OUT!” Yikes!


Some components of the consolidated funding application require uploaded documents or signed forms. Create a checklist and verify that every file uploads correctly. Missing attachments can cause delays or rejections.


Tip #5: Identify Your Collaborators Early


Many sections of the consolidated funding application require multiple signatures, stakeholder acknowledgments, or external collaboration.

For Louisiana charter schools: Double-check whether you are required to submit directly to the state or through another pathway. Requirements vary by charter type, and understanding them early can unlock important funding opportunities through smarter collaboration.


Avoid Chasing Funding for Its Own Sake


New funding streams are tempting, but don’t apply for initiatives just because money is available. Instead of starting new initiatives solely to capture funds, identify where existing priorities already align with new opportunities.
